Home Sudies | Kinship Families
Times have changed and adoption is in the forefront - it is a new solution in a time of crisis and economic challenges. According to AARP,
the 2010 Census showed “nearly 7.8 million children live with a grandparent or other relative who is head of the household. More than 2.5 million
grandparents report they are responsible for their grandchildren who live with them and one third of these grandchildren live in households where neither
parent is living with them.” Three out of five families are touched by adoption.
More and more children find their homes are not the typical mom-and-pop storyline. This new form of family has a name - Kinship Families.
Stepping in for parents due to death, substance abuse or mental health problems, domestic violence, incarceration or military service, many grandparents,
aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers have made great sacrifices to care for and protect these children. In many cases, they have prevented them from entering
formal foster care.
Our Center has a soft spot for this particular service! The owner and her husband adopted their grandson at age 8 after a year of guardianship.
We do kinship home studies often. And we offer counseling for the adopted child and his/her new family.
